The Hidden Gem of Multiplayer Gaming - A Review of Among Us

Among Us, a multiplayer game that made a significant impact worldwide in 2020, captivates its players with a clever, suspenseful premise. Reminiscent of classic party games like Mafia and Werewolf, it ingeniously combines social deception and strategy within a science fiction environment. The game's charm lies in its capacity to immerse the player into a world of subterfuge, testing their ability to outwit their friends.

Clever Gameplay

At its core, Among Us is an uncomplicated game of space-bound survival, where two deceptive impostors lurk among an innocent crew of eight. The crew's objective? Complete a range of minigames to progress through the mission. The impostors' goal? Discreetly eliminate enough crew members to assume command of the spaceship. What makes this game fascinating, however, is the manipulation and mind-play it demands of its participants. Anticipating the opponent's moves, second-guessing their intentions, and constantly changing tactics the game from stagnating, creating an extraordinary gameplay experience.

Fun and Appealing Art Design

This tension-packed cat-and-mouse chase surprisingly takes place in a visually delightful, cartoonish spaceship. The aesthetic style of Among Us is charming in its simplicity, filled with quirky humanoid figures moving around intricate illustrations of engine rooms and reactor decks drawn with playful imagination. This appealing art style not only lightens the otherwise suspenseful atmosphere but also makes the game intuitively interactive.

A Variety of Captivating Tasks

The tasks that crew members must complete are mini-games, testing memory and precision. These tasks, from completing intricate mazes to matching color-coded wires, test your ability to keep calm under suspenseful circumstances. The mini-games cleverly cover significant portions of your screen, multiplying the thrilling suspicion that your character might get eliminated unexpectedly.

The Diverse Roles

Being an impostor is an exhilarating experience requiring a blend of skills, strategy, and deceptive abilities. Subtle isolation of a target, crafty evasion using the spaceship's ventilation system, and quick thinking when cornered, contribute to the overall excitement of the impostor role.

On the other hand, a crew member's role becomes a thrilling detective hunt. Investing in keeping tabs on the other characters, noting their behavior and patterns, deducing deceptive tactics, and deconstructing their alibis contributes to the overall excitement of the gameplay.

What's Needed

While the game captivates, it has areas that could use polish. The game lobby's browser appears outdated and only displays limited rooms - finding suitable matches for your liking may take considerable time. The game also lacks a mechanism to deter players who abruptly leave the game, leading to incomplete rounds without satisfying conclusions. A swift match button and a penalty mechanism for serial quitters would significantly improve the gaming experience. Perhaps an integrated voice chat support would enrich the interaction among players as well.

Pros:

  • Simple but engaging game concept;
  • Appeals to different skill sets;
  • Whimsical and attractive art design;
  • Variety of minigames that are both fun and suspenseful;
  • The thrill of playing either an impostor or crew member.

Cons:

  • Outdated game lobby's browser;
  • Lack of mechanism for deterring serial quitters.

In conclusion, it is a delightful and engaging game. It's a unique innovation that invites players to a world filled with subterfuge and suspense in a light-handed manner. Though it has a few rough edges, it stands firm in its appeal and thrill, making it a game worth revisiting.
