Practical Magic Sequel Set to Enchant a New Generation with Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock Returning to Their Iconic Roles

Two decades and six years have passed since the release of a beloved cinematic piece from the '90s, which cast Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock in the leading roles and is being revitalized with a follow-up story.

Released 26 years ago, the enchanting tale of Practical Magic, which sees Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman portray the Owens sisters, Sally and Gillian, is receiving a much-anticipated sequel. Descending from a lineage rich in magical lore, Sally and Gillian were schooled in the arts of everyday enchantments. The plot thickens when they inadvertently cause the demise of Gillian's malevolent partner and resort to a taboo enchantment in an attempt to amend their mistake, leading to unforeseen consequences. Directed by Griffin Dunne with a script penned by Robin Swicord, Akiva Goldsman, and Adam Brooks, the film did not fare well commercially initially, yet it garnered a dedicated following, rightfully earning its status as a cult classic.

Warner Bros. disclosed the sequel's development through a TikTok announcement, capitalizing on the surge of interest the original film has recently experienced on the platform, with fans recreating the enchanting aesthetic of the Owens' residence. According to Variety, Goldsman will return to write the screenplay, with discussions underway for Bullock and Kidman to reprise their iconic roles.

The original film's ensemble cast also featured notable performances from Stockard Channing, Evan Rachel Wood, Dianne Wiest, Aidan Quinn, Goran Visnjic, Mark Feuerstein, and Chloe Webb.

Efforts to expand the Practical Magic universe into television saw various attempts, including a planned CBS series named Sudbury in 2004, which never progressed. A subsequent attempt in 2010 to launch a prequel series on ABC Family also did not proceed. HBO attempted to revitalize the premise with an order for a Practical Magic prequel series in 2019, which ultimately did not advance.

Practical Magic is currently available to stream on Max. For those eager to explore further, delve into our compilation of the most anticipated upcoming films for 2024 and beyond, or get directly to the highlights with our curated list of upcoming movie release dates.
